How to remove scratches from glasses and restore their new, shiny appearance: a simple recipe

That “simple recipe” idea is another viral claim that’s often misleading. Most scratches on glasses cannot truly be removed at home, and trying DIY fixes can actually make them worse.

First, important truth

  • Glasses lenses usually have protective coatings (anti-glare, UV, scratch-resistant)
  • Once those coatings are scratched, they cannot be restored
  • Home “recipes” don’t repair scratches—they only sometimes temporarily mask them

Common DIY methods you may see (and the reality):

1. Toothpaste

  • Mildly abrasive
  • May slightly reduce the look of very fine scratches on cheap plastic lenses
  • ❌ Can damage coatings and make vision worse

2. Baking soda paste

  • Similar issue: abrasive
  • ❌ Risks dulling or clouding lenses

3. Car wax or furniture polish

  • Fills in scratches temporarily
  • ❌ Not safe for eye lenses; can blur vision

What actually works:

✔ For light scratches:

  • Clean lenses properly with microfiber cloth + lens spray
  • Sometimes improvement is just dirt being removed, not scratch repair

✔ For real scratches:

  • Replace lenses (best option)
  • Some opticians can replace only lenses instead of full frames

✔ Prevention:

  • Always use a hard case
  • Clean with microfiber cloth only (not shirt or tissue)
  • Avoid placing lenses face-down
