Very dirty mop, do not buy it again: a drop of this ingredient and it will be as good as new again

That headline is another common clickbait claim. There isn’t a single “magic drop” that restores every dirty mop, because the best cleaning method depends on the mop material.

Here are methods that actually work:

  • For microfiber mop heads:
    • Wash in warm water with laundry detergent.
    • If there’s detergent or mineral buildup, soak for 15–30 minutes in a mixture of warm water and white vinegar (about 1 part vinegar to 3–4 parts water), then rinse thoroughly.
    • Avoid fabric softener and bleach, which can reduce the microfiber’s effectiveness.
  • For cotton or string mops:
    • Soak in hot water with detergent.
    • Add a small amount of white vinegar to help remove odors and mineral deposits.
    • Rinse well and let it dry completely.

If your mop still smells bad, has stiff fibers, or remains dirty after cleaning, it’s probably worn out and should be replaced. No household ingredient can restore fibers that have broken down with use.

So, if a post says, “Just add one drop of this ingredient and your mop will be as good as new,” it’s almost certainly an exaggeration. Vinegar can help remove buildup and odors, but it won’t make an old, worn mop “like new.”
