5 Vitamins and Nutrients That May Support Digestive Health (But Don’t “Stop” Reflux)
Claims that certain vitamins can “stop reflux” or cure heartburn are misleading. Acid reflux (also called gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD) happens when stomach contents flow back into the esophagus, and vitamins are not a proven replacement for medical treatment.
However, some nutrients may support overall digestive health or help correct deficiencies that can affect the body.
1. Vitamin D
Vitamin D plays a role in immune function and overall health. Some studies have explored links between vitamin D levels and digestive conditions, but there is not enough evidence to say vitamin D prevents or cures reflux.
2. Vitamin B12
People who take long-term acid-reducing medicines (such as proton pump inhibitors) may be at risk of lower vitamin B12 levels because stomach acid helps with B12 absorption.
If you take these medications long term, ask your healthcare professional whether monitoring is needed.
3. Vitamin C (From Foods)
Vitamin C from fruits and vegetables supports general health. Acidic vitamin C supplements, however, may trigger heartburn symptoms in some people.
4. Magnesium
Magnesium is an important mineral involved in many body functions. Some antacids contain magnesium compounds that can help neutralize stomach acid, but magnesium supplements are not a general reflux cure.
5. Zinc
Zinc supports immune function and healing. It does not directly stop reflux, but adequate nutrition supports overall well-being
