What does the color of your urine say about your health?

Urine color can offer clues about hydration and health, but it is not a diagnosis by itself. Many factors—such as foods, vitamins, medications, and medical conditions—can change urine color.

Common urine colors and what they may mean

🟡 Pale yellow to light straw color

  • Usually indicates good hydration.
  • This is often considered a normal range.

🟨 Dark yellow or amber

  • Often suggests you may need more fluids.
  • Can occur after sweating, exercise, or not drinking enough water.

Very clear (almost colorless)

  • May mean you are drinking a lot of water.
  • If it is consistently completely clear, you may be overhydrating.

🟠 Orange urine

  • Can result from dehydration or certain foods and medications.
  • Sometimes may be related to liver or bile problems, especially if accompanied by yellowing of the skin or eyes.

🩷 Pink or red urine

  • Can be caused by foods such as beets or certain medications.
  • It can also indicate blood in the urine, which should be checked—especially if it happens without an obvious cause.

🟤 Brown or tea-colored urine

  • May occur with severe dehydration.
  • Can sometimes be linked to liver problems, muscle injury, or certain medications.

🟢 Green or blue urine

  • May result from dyes, medications, or some infections.
  • Unusual colors that persist should be evaluated.

☁️ Cloudy urine

  • Can be caused by dehydration, crystals, infection, or other urinary issues.
  • If accompanied by burning, pain, fever, or a strong odor, medical advice is recommended.

When to seek medical advice

Contact a healthcare professional if you notice:

  • Blood in your urine or persistent red/pink urine.
  • Dark brown urine that does not improve with hydration.
  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin.
  • Painful urination, fever, back/flank pain, or frequent urgent urination.
  • A sudden, unexplained change in urine color lasting more than a few days.

For most people, hydration level is the biggest factor affecting urine color. Aiming for a light yellow color is a reasonable general guide, but individual needs vary.
