Medications? What You Should Know
Magnesium is an essential mineral that supports muscle function, nerve health, bone strength, and normal heart rhythm. Many people use magnesium supplements for low magnesium levels, muscle cramps, constipation, or other reasons.
However, magnesium supplements can interfere with the absorption of some medications or may require extra caution in certain health conditions. It does not mean everyone taking these medicines must avoid magnesium—rather, they should check with a healthcare professional or pharmacist first.
1. Certain antibiotics
Magnesium can bind to some antibiotics in the digestive tract and reduce how much medicine enters the bloodstream.
Examples include:
- Tetracycline antibiotics (such as doxycycline)
- Fluoroquinolone antibiotics (such as ciprofloxacin or levofloxacin)
What to do: Your healthcare professional may recommend separating the doses by several hours.
2. Thyroid medication (levothyroxine)
Magnesium may reduce absorption of thyroid hormone replacement.
What to do: Take magnesium and levothyroxine at different times as advised by your healthcare professional.
3. Osteoporosis medications (bisphosphonates)
Medicines such as alendronate and similar drugs may not work as well if taken with magnesium.
What to do: Follow timing instructions from your prescriber.
4. Certain diuretics (“water pills”)
Some diuretics can change magnesium levels in the body.
What to do: Your healthcare professional may monitor electrolyte levels if needed.
5. Some heart and blood pressure medications
People with heart conditions or those taking multiple medications should check before adding magnesium, especially if kidney function is reduced.
6. Muscle relaxants and sedating medications
Magnesium may increase feelings of relaxation or drowsiness in some people when combined with certain medicines.
7. Kidney disease medications or kidney-related conditions
The kidneys remove excess magnesium from the body. If kidney function is impaired, magnesium can build up to unsafe levels.
Signs of Too Much Magnesium
Excess magnesium from supplements (especially in people with kidney problems) may cause:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Weakness
- Low blood pressure
- Confusion
- Slow heartbeat (in severe cases
