10 Early Warning Signs of a Stroke Everyone Should Know
A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bleeds. Fast recognition and treatment can greatly improve outcomes, so it is important to know the warning signs and act quickly.
A simple way to remember common stroke symptoms is FAST:
F — Face drooping
One side of the face may droop or feel numb.
Ask the person to smile and check whether both sides move equally.
A — Arm weakness
Sudden weakness, numbness, or inability to raise one arm normally.
S — Speech difficulty
Slurred speech, trouble finding words, confusion, or difficulty understanding others.
T — Time to call emergency services
If these symptoms appear suddenly, seek emergency help immediately.
Other possible stroke warning signs
1. Sudden numbness or weakness
This may affect the:
Face
Arm
Leg
Especially on one side of the body.
2. Sudden confusion or trouble understanding
A person may seem disoriented, unable to follow a conversation, or have difficulty speaking clearly.
3. Sudden vision problems
Possible symptoms include:
Blurred vision
Loss of vision in one or both eyes
Double vision
4. Sudden severe headache
A sudden, intense headache—especially one described as the “worst headache ever”—may be a warning sign, particularly if it occurs with other symptoms.
5. Sudden dizziness or loss of balance
A stroke can cause:
Trouble walking
Loss of coordination
Feeling unusually unsteady
6. Sudden trouble swallowing
Difficulty swallowing can occur when areas of the brain controlling these functions are affected.
7. Sudden weakness affecting coordination
Dropping objects, difficulty using a hand, or clumsiness may appear unexpectedly.
8. Sudden personality or behavior changes
Confusion, agitation, or unusual behavior can occur, especially in some types of stroke.
9. Symptoms that disappear quickly (TIA)
A transient ischemic attack (TIA) can cause stroke-like symptoms that resolve within minutes or hours. Even if symptoms disappear, it requires urgent medical evaluation because it can be a warning of a future stroke.
10. A sudden combination of symptoms
Stroke symptoms often appear without warning and may involve multiple problems at once, such as weakness plus speech trouble or dizziness plus vision changes
