No More Bland Watermelons: How to Pick a Sweet, Juicy One 🍉
Choosing a sweet watermelon doesn’t have to be a guessing game. While no outside sign can guarantee sweetness 100%, these tips can improve your chances:
1. Look for a creamy yellow field spot
✅ Best sign: A large, yellow or golden patch where the watermelon rested on the ground.
- A white or pale spot may mean it was picked before fully ripening.
- A deeper yellow spot often suggests more time to mature.
2. Choose a heavy watermelon
Pick up a few and compare:
- The heavier one for its size usually contains more water and tends to be juicier.
3. Check the shape
- Look for a uniform, symmetrical shape.
- Irregular bumps or dents can sometimes indicate uneven growing conditions.
4. Look for a dry, brown stem (if attached)
- A dried, brown stem may indicate ripeness.
- A very green stem can sometimes mean it was harvested earlier (though stem appearance alone isn’t a perfect test).
5. Look at the webbing
Some watermelons have brown, rough “web-like” markings.
- These are caused by pollination and surface scarring.
- Many people associate more webbing with sweeter fruit, though it is not a guaranteed measure.
6. Try the tapping test (with caution)
A ripe watermelon often makes a deep, hollow sound when tapped.
- A dull sound may suggest it is overripe or has a softer texture.
7. Don’t rely only on size
A huge watermelon is not automatically sweeter. A medium-sized, heavy melon can be an excellent choice.
