How to Diminish Dark Age Spots on Your Hands
A 3-minute home trick cannot safely erase true age spots. Age spots (solar lentigines) develop gradually from sun exposure, and proven treatments usually take weeks or months, while professional treatments can work faster.
A simple daily routine
- Wash gently with mild soap and water.
- Moisturize your hands to reduce dryness and improve their appearance.
- Every morning, apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ sunscreen to the backs of your hands. Sun protection helps prevent spots from becoming darker and helps treatment work better.
- For gradual fading, dermatologists may recommend ingredients such as retinoids, vitamin C, or other skin-lightening treatments, depending on the cause and your skin.
⚠️ Don’t scrub or use harsh DIY remedies
Lemon juice, bleach, abrasive scrubs, and similar “instant” remedies can irritate or damage your skin and potentially make pigmentation worse.
Also, not every dark spot is an age spot. Some rough or changing spots on sun-exposed hands can be precancerous or cancerous, so a new, changing, bleeding, or rough/scaly spot should be examined by a dermatologist before trying to fade it.
