How to remove scratches from glasses and restore their new, shiny appearance: a simple recipe

If you mean eyeglasses lenses, there’s an important reality first:
most “scratches” can’t truly be removed safely, especially on modern lenses with anti-reflective or anti-scratch coatings. Many DIY “fixes” only temporarily fill scratches or actually damage the lens further.

That said, here are safe, simple options depending on severity:

1) First: Clean properly (sometimes it’s not a scratch)

Before trying anything:

  • Rinse glasses under lukewarm water
  • Add a drop of mild dish soap
  • Gently rub with fingers
  • Dry with a microfiber cloth

Sometimes what looks like scratches is just grease or micro-residue.

2) Mild “filling” method (temporary improvement only)

If scratches are light:

Option A: Petroleum jelly (Vaseline)

  • Apply a tiny amount on the lens
  • Rub gently with microfiber cloth
  • Wipe off excess

👉 This doesn’t remove scratches—it can make them less visible temporarily.

3) Baking soda paste (⚠️ risky, use only as last resort)

Only for cheap plastic lenses without coatings:

  • Mix:
    • 1 part baking soda
    • 1 part water
  • Make a soft paste
  • Rub very gently for 10–15 seconds
  • Rinse thoroughly

⚠️ Warning:

  • Can destroy anti-glare coatings
  • Can worsen scratches if used too hard
  • Not recommended for prescription coated lenses

4) Toothpaste method (common but risky)

  • Use non-gel, non-whitening toothpaste
  • Rub lightly with microfiber cloth
  • Rinse and dry

⚠️ Same risks as above: may damage coatings and cause haze.

5) Best real solution (recommended)

If scratches are visible when you wear them:

  • Lens replacement is the only proper fix
  • Most opticians can replace lenses while keeping your frame

What NOT to use

Avoid these completely:

  • Sandpaper or abrasives
  • Nail polish / acetone
  • Vinegar
  • Strong glass cleaners
  • Magic erasers (they are micro-abrasive)

Bottom line

  • Light scratches → can sometimes be visually masked
  • Deep scratches → cannot be repaired safely at home
  • Coated lenses → DIY methods often ruin them

If you want, tell me what type of glasses you have (plastic, glass, anti-glare, etc.), and I can suggest the safest specific option for your case.
