My Son Was Called by a Different Name at School and He Didn’t Even Question It

If you’re referring to a situation where your son was unexpectedly called by a different name at school, it could have several explanations: a simple mistake, a nickname, another student’s name being confused with his, or something more concerning if it happens repeatedly.

If the name was deliberately changed or used despite your son’s objections, it’s reasonable to ask the school calmly what happened and whether there was a particular reason.

If your son didn’t question it, that doesn’t necessarily mean he was comfortable with it. Children sometimes don’t know how to respond to an unfamiliar situation, especially around teachers or peers.

A good approach is to ask him open-ended questions such as:

“What happened when they called you that?”
“How did you feel about it?”
“Has anyone called you that before?”
“Did you know why they used that name?”

Listen without immediately telling him how he should feel. If he seems distressed, confused, withdrawn, or says this is happening repeatedly, talk with his teacher or school counselor to understand what’s going on.
