The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in Throat and How to Get Rid of It

The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in the Throat—and What Can Help

Constant mucus or the feeling of phlegm stuck in your throat is common, but it can have several different causes. It isn’t necessarily a sign of infection.

Common causes
Postnasal drip — allergies, colds, sinus inflammation, or nasal irritation can cause mucus to drain down the back of the throat.
Acid reflux or silent reflux — stomach contents irritating the throat can cause throat clearing, coughing, hoarseness, or a mucus sensation.
Allergies — exposure to pollen, dust mites, mold, or pets can increase mucus production.
Respiratory infections — colds and other infections can temporarily increase mucus.
Asthma or other airway conditions — particularly when mucus occurs with coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath.
Smoking or vaping — can irritate the airways and increase mucus.
What may help

💧 Stay hydrated to keep mucus thinner.
🌬️ Use a humidifier if dry air is irritating your throat.
🧂 Try saline nasal rinsing if nasal congestion or postnasal drip is the problem.
🚭 Avoid smoking and vaping.
🍽️ If reflux seems likely, avoid lying down soon after meals and identify foods that trigger your symptoms.

Avoid repeatedly forcefully clearing your throat—it can further irritate the throat and create a cycle of more throat clearing.

When to see a doctor

See a healthcare professional if mucus persists for several weeks, keeps returning, or is accompanied by blood, unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, chest pain, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, or significant hoarseness.

Bottom line: There isn’t one universal “mucus-clearing” remedy. Finding and treating the underlying cause—such as allergies, postnasal drip, reflux, or airway disease—is usually the most effective approach.
