How to remove scratches from glasses and restore their new, shiny appearance: a simple recipe

Be careful with articles or videos claiming a “simple homemade recipe” can remove scratches from eyeglasses. In most cases, that’s misleading.

The reality

If a scratch is actually in the lens surface, it usually cannot be fully removed at home without removing some of the lens material itself.

Many DIY methods you may see online—such as:

  • Toothpaste
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar mixtures
  • Metal polish
  • Car wax

can actually make the problem worse, especially on lenses with:

  • Anti-reflective coatings
  • Scratch-resistant coatings
  • UV-protective coatings

What you can do safely

1. Clean the lenses properly

Sometimes what looks like a scratch is residue, smudging, or coating damage.

Use:

  • Lukewarm water
  • A drop of mild dish soap
  • A clean microfiber cloth

2. Check for coating damage

Cloudy patches, peeling, or fine lines may be damage to the lens coating rather than a scratch in the lens itself.

3. Ask the optician

Many glasses manufacturers offer:

  • Warranty replacement
  • Discounted lens replacement
  • Repair advice specific to the lens material

If the scratch is minor

You may be able to make it less noticeable by keeping the lenses very clean, but there is generally no safe home treatment that restores the lens to a “like new” condition.

Prevention

  • Store glasses in a hard case.
  • Clean only with a microfiber cloth.
  • Avoid paper towels, tissues, and clothing, which can create micro-scratches.
  • Rinse off dust before wiping.

Bottom line

There is no reliable DIY recipe that removes scratches and restores glasses to a brand-new appearance. Most homemade remedies either do nothing or risk damaging the lenses further. For significant scratches, lens replacement is usually the best solution.
