Sarcopenia: Causes of muscle loss and solutions

Sarcopenia is the age-related loss of muscle mass, strength, and function. It’s common after age 40–50 and becomes more noticeable in older adults, but it’s not “inevitable”—it can often be slowed or partly reversed.


💪 What is sarcopenia?

Sarcopenia is a condition where muscle:

  • Shrinks (loss of mass)
  • Weakens (loss of strength)
  • Becomes less functional (slower movement, poor balance)

It increases risk of falls, frailty, and loss of independence.


🔍 Main causes of muscle loss

1. Aging

  • Natural decline in muscle-building hormones
  • Reduced muscle repair ability

2. Physical inactivity

  • Sitting too much accelerates muscle breakdown
  • “Use it or lose it” applies strongly to muscle

3. Poor protein intake

  • Not enough dietary protein slows muscle rebuilding
  • Common in older adults with low appetite

4. Hormonal changes

  • Lower testosterone, growth hormone, and IGF-1 with age

5. Chronic illness

  • Diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, and inflammation contribute to muscle loss

6. Nutrient deficiencies

  • Vitamin D deficiency can weaken muscles
  • Low overall calorie intake

1. Resistance training (MOST effective)

  • Weight lifting or bodyweight exercises
  • 2–4 times per week
  • Focus: squats, push-ups, resistance bands, light weights

2. Eat enough protein

  • Aim: ~1.0–1.2 g protein/kg body weight (often more in older adults)
  • Good sources: eggs, fish, chicken, lentils, dairy

3. Stay active daily

  • Walking helps, but strength training is key
  • Avoid long periods of sitting

4. Vitamin D support

  • Sun exposure or supplements if deficient
  • Supports muscle function and strength

5. Adequate calories

  • Undereating accelerates muscle loss

6. Sleep & recovery

  • Muscle repair happens during sleep
  • Poor sleep increases muscle breakdown hormones
