New method: colonoscopy will no longer be an invasive examination. (1/2)

Headlines like “New method: colonoscopy will no longer be an invasive examination” are usually exaggerated.

What’s the “new method”?

In many cases, the article is referring to capsule endoscopy, where a person swallows a small camera capsule that takes pictures as it travels through the digestive tract. This is much less invasive than a traditional colonoscopy.

Does it replace colonoscopy?

Not completely.

Traditional colonoscopy remains the gold standard for examining the colon because it allows doctors to:

  • Directly view the colon
  • Take biopsies
  • Remove polyps during the same procedure

Capsule endoscopy cannot currently do those things. If it finds a suspicious abnormality, a standard colonoscopy is often still needed.

Other less-invasive developments

Researchers are also studying:

  • Improved capsule cameras
  • AI-assisted detection of polyps
  • Blood-based screening tests (“liquid biopsies”)
  • Stool-based screening tests

These may make screening easier and increase participation, but they do not yet eliminate the need for colonoscopy in many situations.

Bottom line

A less-invasive future for colorectal screening is developing, but claims that colonoscopy is about to disappear are premature. For now, standard colonoscopy remains the most comprehensive test because it can both detect and treat problems during the same procedure.
