That “ants can’t stand it—use it to keep them away for good” line is basically clickbait. In real life, there’s no single ingredient or trick that permanently removes ants “for good.” You can, however, get very strong control and often keep them away long-term if you combine a few methods.
Here’s what actually works:
1) Remove the reason they come (most important)
Ants are usually after food and water.
- Wipe crumbs and sticky spills immediately
- Store sugar, flour, and sweets in sealed containers
- Don’t leave pet food out overnight
- Fix leaking taps or damp areas
If you skip this step, sprays and hacks won’t last.
2) Block their entry points
- Seal cracks in walls, windows, and floors with silicone or filler
- Pay attention to kitchen corners and door frames
- Follow ant trails to find where they’re entering
3) Use natural repellents (temporary barriers)
These can disrupt their scent trails:
- Vinegar + water spray (1:1)
- Lemon juice
- Cinnamon or cloves near entry points
- Peppermint oil (a few drops in water as spray)
These don’t kill colonies, but they confuse and repel scouts.
4) The most effective method: baiting
If you actually want long-term control:
- Use ant bait (sweet or protein-based)
- Ants carry it back to the colony and kill the queen over time
- This is what actually reduces the whole infestation
Common DIY bait: sugar + a tiny amount of borax (used carefully and kept away from children/pets).
5) Outdoor control (if they keep coming back)
- Keep soil/plant areas away from house walls clear
- Remove garbage regularly
- Trim vegetation touching the house
Reality check:
Ants don’t disappear permanently unless the colony is eliminated or they lose access to food/water. Even then, new colonies can appear later if conditions stay favorable.
If you want, tell me where you’re seeing them (kitchen, bathroom, bedroom), and I can suggest a more targeted fix.
