Vinegar is the key to whiter whites and softer towels, but most use it wrong. Here’s the right way to use it.

Vinegar can be a useful laundry helper, but it is not a magic “whitening” solution. Its main benefits come from removing detergent residue, mineral buildup, and odors, which can help towels feel softer and fabrics look fresher.

How to use vinegar correctly in laundry

🧺 For softer towels

  1. Add ½ to 1 cup of white distilled vinegar to the washing machine’s fabric softener dispenser (or during the rinse cycle).
  2. Wash towels as usual.
  3. Dry completely.

Vinegar can help remove leftover detergent and fabric softener buildup, which often makes towels feel stiff.

🤍 For brighter whites

  • Add vinegar to the rinse cycle to help remove residues that can make whites look dull.
  • For heavily stained whites, vinegar alone usually will not replace a proper stain remover or oxygen bleach.

Important tips

  • Do not mix vinegar with chlorine bleach. The combination can create dangerous chlorine gas.
  • Avoid using vinegar too often on delicate fabrics that may be sensitive to acids.
  • Do not pour vinegar directly onto clothing if you are unsure about the fabric; use the dispenser or dilute it.

A common mistake

Adding vinegar at the same time as laundry detergent can reduce its usefulness because the vinegar may be diluted before the rinse stage. The best place for it is usually the rinse cycle.

For fresher, softer towels: use the right amount of detergent (too much can cause buildup), avoid overloading the washer, and allow towels to dry fully.
