9 Signs of Diabetes That Appear at Night

Diabetes symptoms can sometimes become more noticeable at night because changes in blood sugar can affect sleep, thirst, urination, and nerve function. Possible nighttime signs include:

  1. Frequent urination during the night (nocturia)
High blood sugar can cause the kidneys to remove extra glucose through urine, increasing the need to urinate.
  2. Excessive thirst at night
Losing more fluids through urination can lead to strong thirst, including waking up needing water.
  3. Night sweats
Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially in people taking insulin or certain diabetes medicines, may cause sweating during sleep.
  4. Trouble sleeping
Blood sugar fluctuations, frequent bathroom trips, or discomfort can interrupt sleep.
  5. Increased hunger at night
Low blood sugar or poor glucose control may trigger hunger, even after eating.
  6. Tingling, burning, or numbness in the feet
Diabetes-related nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy) can cause symptoms that are often more noticeable when lying down.
  7. Dry mouth
Dehydration from high blood sugar can leave the mouth feeling dry overnight.
  8. Blurred vision or changes in vision
Blood sugar changes can temporarily affect the eye’s lens, sometimes causing fluctuating vision.
  9. Slow-healing cuts or frequent infections
While not always a nighttime symptom, people may notice symptoms of infections or skin problems more when resting.

Having one of these signs does not mean you have diabetes. If several symptoms occur together—especially frequent urination, unusual thirst, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, or recurrent infections—it’s worth discussing with a healthcare professional and getting a blood glucose test such as fasting glucose or an HbA1c test.
