Here are eight items that are generally best kept out of the dishwasher, along with why:
- Sharp knives – The heat, detergent, and movement can dull the blade and damage the edge. Hand-washing helps them stay sharp longer.
- Cast iron cookware – Dishwasher detergent strips away the seasoned coating and can cause rust.
- Wooden utensils and cutting boards – Hot water and prolonged moisture can cause wood to warp, crack, or split.
- Nonstick pans – Frequent dishwasher cycles can shorten the life of the nonstick coating, even if some manufacturers label them dishwasher-safe.
- Fine china and hand-painted dishes – High heat and strong detergents can fade decorations, chip delicate pieces, or damage gold or silver trim.
- Crystal glassware – Heat and harsh detergents can make crystal cloudy or cause it to crack over time.
- Aluminum cookware – Bare aluminum may discolor, become dull, or react with dishwasher detergent. Anodized aluminum is often more durable, but it’s best to check the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Insulated travel mugs or bottles – If the vacuum seal isn’t dishwasher-safe, high heat can damage the insulation and reduce its ability to keep drinks hot or cold.
A good rule of thumb is to check the manufacturer’s care instructions. If an item is labeled “dishwasher-safe,” it’s generally fine to use the dishwasher, though hand-washing may still extend the lifespan of delicate or high-quality items.
