Does Sleeping on Your Right Side Help or Worsen Snoring?

Sleeping on your right side doesn’t have a special “snoring-reducing” effect on its own. What matters much more is side sleeping vs back sleeping, not whether it’s right or left.

What actually affects snoring

Snoring usually happens when the airway becomes partially blocked during sleep, often due to relaxed throat muscles and tongue falling backward. This is common in conditions like obstructive sleep apnea or simple nasal congestion.

Right side vs left side

  • Right side sleeping: generally neutral for snoring. It doesn’t significantly reduce or worsen it for most people.
  • Left side sleeping: sometimes slightly preferred for people with acid reflux, which can indirectly reduce nighttime throat irritation that may worsen snoring.
  • Big difference: both side positions are usually better than sleeping on your back.

Best sleeping position for snoring

  • Worst: sleeping on your back → tongue and soft tissues fall backward, increasing airway blockage
  • Better: sleeping on either side → keeps airway more open
  • Best (practical): whichever side you can comfortably stay on all night

If snoring is frequent or loud

It may be linked to:

  • Nasal blockage or allergies
  • Excess weight
  • Alcohol before sleep
  • Sleep apnea (especially if there are pauses in breathing or daytime sleepiness)

Bottom line

Right-side sleeping is not a “snoring cure,” but side sleeping in general can help reduce snoring compared to back sleeping.
