Between 65 and 85: If You Can Still Do These 5 Things on Your Own, You’re Stronger Than You ThinkAging does not automatically mean losing independence. Many abilities that seem ordinary can actually reflect strength, balance, mobility, coordination, and overall function.

If you can still do these things independently, they may be signs that you are maintaining good physical ability:

  1. Get up from a chair without using your hands
    • This requires leg strength, balance, and core stability.
  2. Walk confidently and handle daily movement
    • Being able to walk, turn, climb a few steps, or move around safely reflects mobility and endurance.
  3. Carry everyday items
    • Lifting groceries, a small bag, or household objects shows useful muscle strength and coordination.
  4. Prepare meals and manage daily tasks
    • Cooking, organizing your home, and handling personal routines involve physical ability, planning, and independence.
  5. Get dressed and care for yourself
    • Dressing, bathing, and managing personal care require flexibility, balance, and functional strength.

Other signs of healthy aging

  • Staying socially connected
  • Keeping your mind active
  • Exercising regularly (including strength and balance exercises)
  • Getting enough protein and nutritious foods
  • Managing health conditions with regular checkups

Strength in later life is not just about lifting heavy weights—it is about being able to do the activities that matter to you safely and independently. If certain tasks become harder over time, targeted exercise, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes can often help maintain or improve function.
