The five drinks that are most harmful to your bones, according to health experts.

Five Drinks That May Be Harmful to Bone Health (Especially When Consumed Often)Bones need nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, protein, and minerals to stay strong. No single drink will “destroy” your bones, but some beverages may negatively affect bone health when they replace nutritious choices or are consumed in large amounts.

  1. Sugary soft drinks (sodas)
    • High sugar intake can contribute to poor overall nutrition if these drinks replace milk, water, or nutrient-rich beverages.
    • Some cola drinks contain phosphoric acid, which has been studied for possible links with lower bone health in certain dietary patterns, though the relationship is complex.
  2. Excessive alcohol
    • Heavy alcohol consumption can interfere with calcium balance and bone formation.
    • It is associated with a higher risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
  3. Energy drinks
    • Many contain high levels of caffeine and sugar.
    • Excess caffeine may slightly affect calcium balance, especially when calcium intake is low.
  4. Very high amounts of caffeinated drinks
    • Large caffeine intakes may increase calcium loss in urine in some people.
    • Moderate coffee or tea consumption is generally not considered harmful for most healthy adults.
  5. Sweetened fruit drinks and highly processed beverages
    • These can add a lot of sugar without providing the fiber and nutrients found in whole fruits.

Drinks that support bone health

  • Water (for hydration)
  • Milk or fortified plant-based milks (for calcium and vitamin D, depending on the product)
  • Unsweetened yogurt drinks
  • Balanced diets rich in calcium and vitamin D

The biggest risks to bone health usually come from long-term patterns—such as poor nutrition, lack of exercise, smoking, heavy alcohol use, and inadequate calcium/vitamin D—not from an occasional soda or coffee.
