The idea that you can determine someone’s true character by looking at only two things is more of a catchy saying than a proven fact. Human character is complex and can’t be accurately judged by one or two traits.
That said, two behaviors many people consider meaningful are:
- How they treat people who can’t benefit them
- For example, how they treat service workers, strangers, children, or people with less power. Consistent kindness and respect can say a lot about someone’s values.
- How they act when things don’t go their way
- Everyone faces disappointment or conflict. How a person handles frustration, takes responsibility for mistakes, and treats others under stress can reveal important aspects of their character.
Other qualities that are often more informative than first impressions include:
- Honesty
- Reliability
- Empathy
- Respect for boundaries
- Willingness to admit mistakes
- Consistency between words and actions
Rather than relying on a single “secret” to judge someone, it’s usually more accurate to observe their behavior over time and across different situations.
