Don’t Ignore Leg Cramps at Night: Here’s What You Should Know

Nighttime leg cramps are sudden, painful muscle contractions that often affect the calf, foot, or thigh during sleep or while resting. They are common, especially as people get older, but frequent or severe cramps may deserve attention.

Common Causes of Night Leg Cramps

1. Muscle Fatigue or Overuse

Long periods of standing, walking, or intense exercise can strain muscles and trigger cramps.

2. Dehydration

Not drinking enough fluids may contribute to muscle discomfort, especially in hot weather or after sweating.

3. Mineral Imbalances

Low levels of certain minerals—such as magnesium, potassium, or calcium—can affect muscle function. However, taking supplements is not always helpful unless a deficiency is present.

4. Reduced Muscle Flexibility

Tight calf muscles or limited stretching may increase the chance of cramps.

5. Certain Medications

Some medicines may contribute to cramps in some people, including certain:

  • Diuretics (“water pills”)
  • Cholesterol-lowering medicines (statins)
  • Some blood pressure medications

Do not stop prescribed medication without speaking with your healthcare professional.

6. Circulation or Nerve Problems

Conditions affecting blood flow or nerves may sometimes contribute to leg symptoms
