How to Remove the Dark Ring Around Faucets (Sink Stains)

The dark circle around a faucet is usually caused by a buildup of hard-water minerals, soap residue, grime, mold/mildew, or oxidation. The best cleaning method depends on the surface.

Method 1: White vinegar + baking soda (for mineral buildup)

  1. Soak a paper towel or cloth in white vinegar.
  2. Wrap it around the stained area and leave it for 15–30 minutes.
  3. Scrub gently with an old toothbrush or soft sponge.
  4. Rinse well and dry.

For stubborn spots:

  • Sprinkle a little baking soda on the area after the vinegar soak.
  • Gently scrub, then rinse.

(Do not mix vinegar and baking soda expecting extra cleaning power—the fizz mostly neutralizes them. Use them one after another.)

Method 2: Dish soap for greasy buildup

  1. Apply warm water with a few drops of dish soap.
  2. Let it sit for a few minutes.
  3. Scrub around the faucet base with a soft brush.
  4. Rinse and dry.

Method 3: For black or mold-like rings

  • Use a bathroom cleaner designed for mildew, or a diluted bleach solution if the surface allows it.
  • Never mix bleach with vinegar or other acids.

Prevent the ring from coming back

  • Wipe around the faucet base after cleaning.
  • Dry standing water regularly.
  • Clean mineral deposits before they become thick.

Tip: Avoid abrasive powders, steel wool, or rough scrubbers on chrome or polished fixtures because they can scratch the finish.

If you tell me whether the faucet is on a stainless steel sink, ceramic sink, granite/quartz countertop, or glass surface, I can suggest the safest method.
