The claim “Put 4 drops in your ear and you will hear like new again!” is a common type of online health claim, but there is no single ear drop that can reliably restore hearing for everyone.
Hearing loss can happen for many different reasons:
- Earwax buildup: Drops designed to soften wax (such as certain over-the-counter earwax drops) may help some people, but they do not fix hearing loss caused by other problems.
- Ear infection or inflammation: May require medical evaluation and specific treatment.

- Damage to the eardrum or inner ear: Drops may not help and some can be harmful if the eardrum is damaged.
Be cautious with home remedies such as putting oil, garlic mixtures, hydrogen peroxide solutions, or unknown “miracle” drops into the ear without knowing the cause of hearing problems. Some substances can irritate the ear canal or worsen certain conditions.
