How to Remove Set-In Grease Stains From Laundry
Set-in grease stains can be stubborn, but they often respond well to treatments that break down oils before washing.
What you’ll need
- Liquid dish soap (good at cutting grease)
- Baking soda (optional)
- Laundry detergent
- Soft toothbrush or small brush
- Warm water (if the fabric allows)
Method
- Do not put the stained item in the dryer again
- Heat can make grease stains harder to remove.
- Apply dish soap directly to the stain
- Put a few drops of grease-cutting dish soap on the spot.
- Gently rub it into the fabric with your fingers or a soft toothbrush.
- Let it sit
- Leave it for 10–30 minutes. For older stains, you may need longer.
- Add baking soda for extra cleaning power (optional)
- Sprinkle a little baking soda over the soapy area.
- Gently scrub, then let it sit another 10 minutes.
- Wash normally
- Wash using the warmest water recommended on the care label.
- Add your regular laundry detergent.
- Check before drying
- Make sure the stain is gone before putting the item in the dryer.
- If it remains, repeat the treatment.
Extra tips
- For delicate fabrics (silk, wool, cashmere), avoid aggressive scrubbing and consider professional cleaning.
- For white cotton or sturdy fabrics, a small amount of oxygen-based stain remover can help with old stains.
- Avoid ironing over a grease stain—it can permanently set it.
For very old stains (months or years old), tell me the fabric type and the stain source (cooking oil, butter, motor oil, grease, etc.), and I can suggest a more targeted method.
