How to Clean Dirty Pillows So They Look Fresh and Smell Clean Again

Over time, pillows can collect sweat, oils, dust, and odors. The best cleaning method depends on the pillow filling, so check the care label first.

For machine-washable pillows (many polyester and down-alternative pillows)

You’ll need:

  • Mild laundry detergent
  • Baking soda (optional for odors)
  • White vinegar (optional for freshness)

Steps:

  1. Remove pillowcases and protective covers.
  2. Wash two pillows at a time to keep the washing machine balanced.
  3. Add your regular detergent.
  4. Add about ½ cup of baking soda to help neutralize odors (optional).
  5. Add ½ cup of white vinegar during the rinse cycle instead of fabric softener (optional).
  6. Use warm water if the care label allows.
  7. Run an extra rinse cycle to remove leftover detergent.
  8. Dry completely—this is important. Use a dryer with dryer balls or clean tennis balls to help fluff them.

To remove yellow stains

  • Make a paste with baking soda and a little water.
  • Apply it to stained areas for 15–30 minutes.
  • Wash as usual.

Important tips

  • Do not machine-wash memory foam pillows unless the manufacturer specifically says it is safe; they usually need spot cleaning.
  • Never store pillows while damp—trapped moisture can cause mildew.
  • Sun-drying (when suitable for the material) can help reduce odors.

For long-lasting freshness, wash pillowcases weekly and clean pillows every few months if the care instructions allow.
