Baking Soda for Dark Spots and Under-Eye Shadows: What You Should Know Before Trying It

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a popular home remedy for skin concerns, but it is important to know that it is not a proven treatment for dark spots or under-eye circles. While it may temporarily make skin feel smoother because it is mildly abrasive, it can also irritate the skin and damage the protective barrier, especially on delicate areas like under the eyes.

Why baking soda may be risky for your skin

1. It can disrupt your skin’s natural pH

Healthy skin is slightly acidic. Baking soda is alkaline, and repeated use may:

  • Cause dryness
  • Increase sensitivity
  • Trigger redness or irritation
  • Make some pigmentation problems worse

2. It can be too harsh under the eyes

The skin around the eyes is thinner than most facial skin. Scrubbing with baking soda can lead to:

  • Burning or stinging
  • Flaking
  • Increased darkness from irritation

3. It does not remove the common causes of dark spots

Dark spots and under-eye shadows can result from:

  • Sun exposure
  • Aging-related changes
  • Hormonal changes
  • Acne marks
  • Genetics
  • Allergies or rubbing the eyes
  • Lack of sleep or dehydration

Baking soda does not address these underlying causes.

Safer options for dark spots

For sun-related dark spots:

  • Use daily sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
  • Consider proven ingredients such as:
    • Vitamin C
    • Niacinamide
    • Retinoids (if suitable for your skin)

For acne marks:

  • Avoid picking or irritating blemishes
  • Use gentle skincare products
  • Consider dermatologist-recommended treatments if spots persist
