Nail Lines: What They Can Reveal About Your Health
Changes in your nails can sometimes provide clues about what’s happening in your body, but most nail lines are harmless and can come from normal aging, minor injuries, or everyday stress on the nails.
Here are some common types of nail lines and what they may mean:
1. Vertical ridges (lines running from cuticle to tip)
- Very common, especially with age.
- Often related to natural changes in nail growth or dryness.
- Usually not a sign of disease.
2. Horizontal grooves (Beau’s lines)
- Indented lines that run across the nail.
- Can appear after a temporary interruption in nail growth, such as:
- A significant illness or infection
- Major physical stress
- Injury to the nail
- Certain medical treatments
- Multiple nails affected at once may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional.
3. White lines or spots
- Small white spots are often caused by minor trauma to the nail and usually grow out.
- Persistent white bands across multiple nails can sometimes be associated with underlying health conditions and should be evaluated if accompanied by other symptoms.
4. Dark or black lines
- A brown or black streak under a nail can have many causes, including injury or increased pigment production.
- A new, changing, widening, or irregular dark streak—especially on one nail—should be checked by a clinician to rule out more serious causes.
5. Spoon-shaped nails (koilonychia)
- Nails that become thin and curve upward.
- Can sometimes be linked to iron deficiency or other conditions.
6. Brittle, splitting nails
- Often caused by dryness, frequent washing, chemicals, or aging.
- Sometimes associated with nutritional deficiencies or thyroid problems
