Why is it so important not to flush the toilet after every trip to the toilet to urinate?

It’s not actually important for everyone to avoid flushing after every urination. The idea that you should “save flushes” usually comes from water conservation, not from a health benefit.

The reasons some people choose not to flush every time are:

  • Saving water: Each toilet flush uses water (modern toilets often use around 1.3–1.6 gallons / 5–6 liters per flush, though older toilets can use more). Skipping some flushes can reduce household water use.
  • Lowering utility costs: Fewer flushes can slightly reduce water bills.
  • Environmental reasons: Using less treated water can reduce demand on water systems.

However, there are situations where flushing after urinating is a good idea:

  • If multiple people share the bathroom, leaving urine sitting can create odor and an unpleasant environment.
  • If someone has a weakened immune system, keeping the toilet clean and flushing normally is preferable.
  • In hot weather or poorly ventilated bathrooms, odors can build up more quickly.

A common saying is “if it’s yellow, let it mellow,” but it’s mainly a water-saving choice, not a medical recommendation. For most households, flushing after each use is perfectly reasonable—especially if comfort, hygiene, or sharing the bathroom matters more than saving a few liters of water.
