5 Diabetes Symptoms That May Appear at Night

Diabetes can affect the body at any time of day, and some signs may become more noticeable during the night. These symptoms do not always mean someone has diabetes, but they can be reasons to check blood sugar levels or speak with a healthcare professional.

1. Frequent urination during the night (nocturia)

When blood sugar levels are high, the kidneys may try to remove excess glucose through urine. This can lead to:

  • Waking up several times to urinate
  • Increased thirst after urinating
  • Poor sleep

2. Excessive thirst at night

High blood sugar can cause the body to lose more water, leading to:

  • Dry mouth
  • Needing to drink frequently
  • Waking up feeling very thirsty

3. Night sweats

Some people with diabetes may experience sweating during sleep, particularly if blood sugar drops too low (hypoglycemia), especially if they use insulin or certain diabetes medications.

Possible signs of low blood sugar include:

  • Shaking
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Confusion
  • Hunger
  • Feeling weak or anxious

4. Tingling, burning, or numbness in the feet

Diabetes-related nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy) can cause:

  • Burning sensations
  • Pins-and-needles feelings
  • Pain that becomes more noticeable at night

5. Sleep problems and fatigue

Diabetes may contribute to:

  • Difficulty staying asleep
  • Tiredness during the day
  • Restless sleep

Sleep apnea, which is more common in people with diabetes, can also cause nighttime breathing problems and daytime fatigue.

When to get checked

Consider speaking with a healthcare professional if you have symptoms such as:

  • Frequent urination and unusual thirst
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing wounds
  • Repeated infections
