What Is The Normal Blood Pressure For Each Age

Normal Blood Pressure by Age: What’s Considered Healthy?

Blood pressure does not have a different “normal” number for every age. For most adults, the general goal is usually around:

  • Normal: Less than 120/80 mmHg
  • Elevated: 120–129 systolic and less than 80 diastolic
  • High blood pressure (Hypertension): 130/80 mmHg or higher (depending on guidelines and individual health factors)

A general reference guide:

Age group Typical healthy range (approx.)
Children Varies greatly by age, height, and sex; pediatric charts are used
Teens Around 90–120 / 60–80 mmHg
Adults 18–39 Around 110–120 / 70–80 mmHg
Adults 40–59 Around 110–130 / 70–80 mmHg
Adults 60+ Often still targeted near 120–130 / 70–80 mmHg, depending on health and doctor guidance

A slightly higher reading in older adults does not automatically mean it is “normal for age.” Consistently high blood pressure can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, and other complications.

For the most accurate reading:

  • Rest quietly for 5 minutes before measuring.
  • Sit with your back supported and feet flat on the floor.
  • Keep the arm at heart level.
  • Take multiple readings on different days.

If you share your age and blood pressure reading (for example, 145/90), I can help explain what that number means.
