Claims that a homemade ingredient will “burn weeds in 1 day and they never grow again” are usually exaggerated. Most weed killers—whether homemade or commercial—do not permanently prevent weeds from returning, because new weeds can grow from seeds already in the soil or from roots that survive.
A few common approaches:
- Boiling water: Can kill the leaves and surface growth of small weeds when poured carefully on them, but deep roots may survive.
- Vinegar-based sprays: Household vinegar can burn foliage, especially on young weeds, but many perennial weeds can regrow. Stronger horticultural vinegar products require caution.
- Mulch: A 2–4 inch layer of organic mulch (like wood chips or straw) can help block sunlight and reduce new weed growth.
- Hand removal: Pulling weeds with the roots, especially when the soil is moist, is often the most reliable method for small areas.
