How to get rid of inner ear crystals and reduce vertigo

“Inner ear crystals” usually refers to benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). It happens when tiny calcium carbonate crystals (called otoconia) become displaced in the inner ear and move into the balance canals, causing brief episodes of spinning dizziness—often when you turn your head, lie down, or get up.

Ways that may help:

1. Epley maneuver (a common repositioning exercise)

  • This series of head and body movements is designed to guide the crystals back to where they belong.
  • It is most helpful when BPPV affects a specific ear and canal, which is why a clinician or physical therapist may first confirm the diagnosis.
  • If you try it at home, follow a reliable guide and stop if it causes severe symptoms.

2. Vestibular rehabilitation

  • A physical therapist trained in balance disorders can teach exercises that reduce dizziness and improve balance.

3. Move carefully during attacks

  • Sit or lie down when dizzy to prevent falls.
  • Avoid sudden head movements until symptoms settle.
  • Use support when getting out of bed if needed.

When to get medical help urgently

Seek care promptly if vertigo comes with:

  • Weakness or numbness on one side
  • Trouble speaking, facial drooping, severe headache
  • Chest pain, fainting, or new trouble walking
  • Sudden hearing loss
  • Persistent dizziness that does not behave like typical BPPV
