How to Get Rid of Milia: Those Annoying Fat Cysts

Milia are tiny, white or yellowish bumps that often appear on the face—especially around the eyes, cheeks, nose, and forehead. They can look like small “fat cysts,” but they are actually tiny keratin-filled cysts (keratin is a protein found in skin, hair, and nails). They are common and usually harmless.

Ways to help get rid of milia

1. Don’t squeeze or pop them

  • Unlike pimples, milia do not have an opening to drain.
  • Picking can cause irritation, scarring, or infection.

2. Use gentle exfoliation

  • Products containing ingredients such as:
    • Salicylic acid (BHA) can help clear dead skin buildup.
    • Lactic acid or glycolic acid (AHAs) can help with skin cell turnover.
  • Start slowly, especially around sensitive areas like the eyes.

3. Consider a retinoid product

  • Over-the-counter retinol or prescription retinoids may help prevent new milia by encouraging skin cell turnover.
  • They can irritate skin at first, so gradual use and moisturizer are important.

4. Keep skincare products lightweight

  • Heavy creams, thick oils, or products that clog pores may contribute to some people developing more bumps.
  • Choose non-comedogenic products if you are prone to milia.

5. Professional removal
A dermatologist or trained skincare professional can remove stubborn milia safely using sterile techniques. This is often the quickest option for existing bumps.
