Sarcopenia: Causes of Muscle Loss and Solutions

Sarcopenia is the gradual loss of muscle mass, strength, and physical function that often occurs with aging. It can begin as early as middle age and becomes more common after age 60, but it is not an unavoidable part of growing older. Many people can slow or even improve muscle loss with the right habits.

Common Causes of Sarcopenia

1. Aging-related muscle changes

  • The body becomes less efficient at building new muscle proteins.
  • Muscle fibers shrink, especially the fast-twitch fibers used for strength and balance.

2. Lack of resistance exercise

  • Muscles need regular challenges to maintain strength.
  • Long periods of inactivity accelerate muscle loss.

3. Not eating enough protein

  • Older adults often need adequate protein to maintain muscle.
  • Low protein intake can make it harder for the body to repair and build muscle tissue.

4. Hormonal changes

  • Lower levels of hormones such as testosterone, growth hormone, and estrogen can affect muscle maintenance.

5. Chronic illness and inflammation

  • Conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, or prolonged illness can contribute to muscle loss.

6. Poor nutrition or unintentional weight loss

  • Losing weight without enough protein and exercise can result in losing muscle rather than just fat.

Ways to Fight Sarcopenia

1. Strength training (the most effective strategy) đź’Ş

Aim for 2–3 sessions per week, depending on your fitness level.

Examples:

  • Squats or chair stands
  • Resistance bands
  • Light weights
  • Wall push-ups
  • Step-ups

The goal is gradual improvement—not lifting the heaviest weight possible.
