Why is it so important not to flush the toilet after every trip to the toilet to urinate?

For most people, it’s not medically important to avoid flushing after every time you urinate. In fact, flushing is generally the more hygienic choice. The advice to “let it mellow if it’s yellow” is usually about saving water, not improving health.

Here are the main considerations:

Reasons some people don’t flush every time

  • Water conservation: Older toilets can use 3–7 gallons (11–26 liters) per flush, while newer high-efficiency models use about 1.28 gallons (4.8 liters) or less. Skipping some flushes can reduce household water use.
  • Environmental concerns: In areas experiencing drought or water shortages, reducing unnecessary flushing can help conserve water.

Reasons to flush regularly

  • Odors: Urine left in the bowl can develop an unpleasant smell over time.
  • Mineral buildup: Standing urine can contribute to staining and mineral deposits in the toilet.
  • Hygiene: Although fresh urine from a healthy person is generally low in bacteria, bacteria can multiply in standing urine, especially after it sits for hours.

Good flushing habits

  • Flush after urinating if:
    • The toilet is shared by multiple people.
    • Someone in the household has a urinary tract infection or another illness where hygiene is especially important.
    • The urine has an unusually strong odor or abnormal appearance.
  • Close the toilet lid before flushing when possible. This may reduce the spread of tiny droplets (“toilet plume”) into the surrounding air
