Who Is Most at Risk of Night Leg Cramps?

Night cramps (often called nocturnal leg cramps) are sudden, painful muscle contractions that usually affect the calves, feet, or thighs during sleep. They are common and can happen to anyone, but some people have a higher risk.

1. Older adults 👵👴

The risk increases with age because of:

  • Natural muscle changes
  • Reduced flexibility
  • Changes in nerve and blood circulation function

2. Pregnant women 🤰

Leg cramps are more common during pregnancy, especially later months, due to changes in circulation, body weight, and muscle demands.

3. People who are dehydrated 💧

Low fluid intake or heavy sweating may contribute to muscle cramping.

4. People who overuse their muscles 🏃

Risk may increase after:

  • Intense exercise
  • Long periods of standing
  • Unusual physical activity

5. People with certain health conditions

Night cramps may be more common with:

  • Diabetes
  • Kidney disease
  • Nerve disorders
  • Peripheral artery disease
  • Thyroid problems

6. People taking certain medications 💊

Some medicines may be linked with cramps in some people, including:

  • Diuretics (“water pills”)
  • Certain blood pressure medicines
  • Some cholesterol medications

Do not stop prescribed medications without medical advice.
