The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in Throat and How to Get Rid of It

Constant phlegm or mucus in the throat (often described as “something stuck in my throat”) is common and can have several causes. It does not always mean there is an infection.

Common causes of ongoing throat mucus

  1. Postnasal drip
  • Mucus from the nose or sinuses draining down the back of the throat can cause frequent throat clearing.
  • Common with allergies, colds, sinus irritation, or nasal congestion.
  1. Acid reflux (including silent reflux)
  • Stomach acid reaching the throat can irritate tissues and trigger extra mucus.
  • It may happen without obvious heartburn.
  • Signs can include hoarseness, a lump-in-the-throat feeling, coughing, or mucus after meals.
  1. Allergies
  • Dust, pollen, mold, or pet dander can increase mucus production.
  • Often comes with sneezing, itchy eyes, or a runny/stuffy nose.
  1. Smoking or air irritation
  • Cigarette smoke, pollution, and strong fragrances can irritate airways and increase mucus.
  1. Dehydration
  • When you don’t drink enough fluids, mucus can become thicker and harder to clear.
  1. Asthma or chronic airway conditions
  • Some people produce extra mucus with asthma or other lung conditions.

Ways to reduce throat mucus

  • Drink enough water to help thin mucus.
  • Use a saline nasal spray or rinse if nasal drainage is the cause.
  • Avoid smoke and other irritants.
  • Try humidifying dry air if your environment is very dry.
  • If reflux may be involved:
    • Avoid large meals close to bedtime.
    • Limit personal trigger foods (often spicy, fatty, acidic foods, caffeine, or alcohol).
    • Elevate the head slightly during sleep if symptoms occur at night.
  • Avoid excessive throat clearing, which can further irritate the throat; try sipping water or swallowing instead.
