Avoid These 6 Foods That May Harm Your Thyroid Health, Experts Warn

The claim that certain foods “harm your thyroid” is often oversimplified. Most people can eat a normal, varied diet without damaging their thyroid. However, some foods may affect thyroid function in certain situations, especially in people with iodine deficiency, thyroid disease, or specific dietary patterns.

Foods to be mindful of:

1. Excessive amounts of raw cruciferous vegetables

Examples: raw cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts

  • These contain goitrogens, compounds that can interfere with iodine use by the thyroid when eaten in very large amounts, especially raw.
  • Normal portions—particularly when cooked—are generally considered safe for most people.

2. Highly processed foods

Examples: packaged snacks, fast foods, sugary drinks

  • They may contribute to weight gain and inflammation, which can complicate management of thyroid conditions.

3. Excessive soy intake (for some people)

Examples: soy protein powders, large amounts of soy-based foods

  • Soy may interfere with thyroid hormone absorption in people taking thyroid medication if consumed close to the medication time.
  • It does not usually damage the thyroid in people with adequate iodine intake.

4. Foods high in added sugars

  • High sugar intake can affect metabolic health and may make it harder to manage weight, which is often a concern with hypothyroidism.

5. Excessive iodine-containing supplements or seaweed products
