Left Side Body Pain: What It Could Mean and When to Pay Attention

Pain on the left side of the body can come from many different causes. Sometimes it is due to something minor, such as a muscle strain, but in certain situations it can signal a serious medical problem. The location, intensity, timing, and accompanying symptoms are important clues.

Common Causes of Left-Sided Pain

1. Muscle Strain or Injury

A pulled muscle is one of the most common causes of pain on one side of the body.

Possible signs:

  • Pain that worsens with movement
  • Tenderness when touching the area
  • Pain after exercise, lifting, or unusual activity

2. Nerve Problems

Nerves affected by pressure or irritation can cause:

  • Sharp or burning pain
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Pain that travels into the arm or leg

Examples include pinched nerves in the neck or back.

3. Heart-Related Problems (Especially Left Chest Pain)

Left-sided chest discomfort can sometimes be a warning sign of a heart problem.

Seek emergency help if pain is accompanied by:

  • Pressure, squeezing, or heaviness in the chest
  • Pain spreading to the left arm, shoulder, jaw, or back
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness or fainting

4. Digestive Causes

Pain on the left side of the abdomen may be related to:

  • Gas or constipation
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Diverticular disease
  • Other digestive issues

The pain may change with eating or bowel movements.

5. Kidney Problems

Pain in the left flank or lower back area may be linked to kidney issues, such as stones or infection.

Possible signs:

  • Severe side or back pain
  • Pain during urination
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Blood in urine

6. Spleen-Related Issues

The spleen is located in the upper left abdomen. Problems affecting it may cause:

  • Pain under the left ribs
  • Tenderness in the upper abdomen
  • Pain that may extend to the left shoulder

7. Stroke Warning Signs

A stroke usually does not cause general left-side pain, but it can cause sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body.

Watch for:

  • Drooping on one side of the face
  • Weakness in one arm or leg
  • Trouble speaking
  • Sudden confusion
  • Loss of balance

Call emergency services immediately if these occur
