The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in Your Throat—and How to Get Rid of It

That feeling of mucus stuck in your throat, frequent throat-clearing, or constantly needing to swallow can be frustrating.

The good news is that there are several common causes—and treating the underlying cause is usually more useful than trying to “flush out” mucus.

👃 1. Postnasal drip

Mucus draining from the nose into the back of the throat is one of the most common reasons for persistent throat mucus.

It can happen with allergies, a cold, sinus problems, or irritation of the nasal passages.

You may notice a runny or stuffy nose, frequent throat-clearing, coughing, or a sensation of mucus dripping down your throat.

🌿 2. Allergies

Pollen, dust mites, pets, mold, and other allergens can increase mucus production.

If the problem comes with sneezing, an itchy nose, watery eyes, or seasonal symptoms, allergies may be contributing.

🔥 3. Acid reflux

Reflux doesn’t always cause classic heartburn.

Some people develop laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), in which stomach contents irritate the throat. This can cause chronic throat-clearing, hoarseness, coughing, a lump-like sensation, or increased throat mucus.

🦠 4. A recent respiratory infection

Colds and other respiratory infections can temporarily increase mucus and throat irritation.

Even after the infection improves, coughing or throat irritation can sometimes linger for a while.

🚬 5. Smoking and airway irritants

Cigarette smoke, vaping, air pollution, strong fragrances, and other irritants can aggravate the airways and increase coughing or mucus.

Reducing exposure can make a significant difference.

🫁 6. Asthma or other lung conditions

Persistent phlegm can sometimes be associated with asthma, chronic bronchitis, COPD, bronchiectasis, or other respiratory conditions.

If you have ongoing coughing, wheezing, breathlessness, or large amounts of phlegm, it’s worth getting evaluated rather than assuming it’s simply postnasal drip.

💧 What can actually help?

Try:

✔️ Stay adequately hydrated.
Fluids can help prevent mucus from becoming excessively thick.

✔️ Consider saline nasal spray or irrigation if nasal congestion or postnasal drip is contributing. Follow product instructions carefully.

✔️ Avoid smoke and other airway irritants.
