I soaked my berries in salt water and saw these white wiggling things come out. Should I just throw them away?

Not necessarily. If you soaked fresh berries (especially raspberries, blackberries, or strawberries) in salt water and saw tiny white “worms” or wiggling larvae come out, they are most likely small insect larvae that were already inside or on the fruit. This can happen because some insects lay eggs in ripening fruit.

Finding them doesn’t automatically mean you need to throw the berries away.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Discard any berries that are moldy, mushy, or spoiled.
  • Rinse the remaining berries thoroughly under cool running water to remove any remaining larvae or debris.
  • If you’re uncomfortable eating them, it’s perfectly reasonable to discard them.

To reduce the chance of finding larvae in the future:

  • Buy berries that are firm and free of damage.
  • Refrigerate them soon after purchase.
  • Rinse them just before eating (washing too early can make them spoil faster).

While the idea is unpleasant, accidentally eating a tiny insect larva from fresh produce is generally not harmful for most healthy people. The main concern is the freshness and cleanliness of the fruit, not the larvae themselves. If you notice signs of spoilage, an off smell, or extensive infestation, it’s best to throw the berries away.
