Constant Phlegm in Your Throat and You Don’t Know Why? Here’s What Could Be Happening…

That annoying feeling of mucus stuck in your throat, constantly needing to swallow, cough, or clear your throat can have several different causes.

And it’s not always “too much mucus.”

👃 1. Postnasal drip

Mucus can drain from your nose into the back of your throat because of allergies, a cold, sinus problems, or nasal irritation.

🌿 2. Allergies

If you also have sneezing, an itchy nose, watery eyes, or seasonal symptoms, allergies may be increasing mucus production.

🔥 3. Silent reflux

Acid or stomach contents can sometimes reach the throat without causing obvious heartburn. This may lead to throat-clearing, hoarseness, coughing, or a lump-like sensation.

🚬 4. Smoke and other irritants

Smoking, vaping, pollution, and strong fragrances can irritate your airways and contribute to coughing and mucus.

🦠 5. A recent infection

After a cold or respiratory infection, mucus and throat irritation can sometimes linger even after you otherwise feel better.

🫁 6. Asthma or another respiratory condition

Persistent phlegm, especially with coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath, can sometimes be related to asthma or another lung condition.

💧 What may help?

✔️ Drink enough fluids
✔️ Consider saline nasal spray/rinses if postnasal drip is contributing
✔️ Avoid smoking and other airway irritants
✔️ Don’t repeatedly forcefully clear your throat
✔️ If reflux seems possible, discuss it with a healthcare professional

⚠️ Don’t ignore persistent symptoms

If phlegm or coughing continues for several weeks, keeps returning, or has no obvious explanation, it’s worth getting checked.

Seek prompt medical attention if you cough up blood, have significant difficulty breathing, chest pain, unexplained weight loss, or feel seriously unwell.
