Recipe

Put this ingredient in your bucket and your floor will stay clean all week.

If you’re referring to the viral cleaning tip, the ingredient is salt. The idea is to add a small amount of salt to your mop bucket, then mop the floor as usual.

How the hack is supposed to work

  • Salt: Often claimed to help deodorize and reduce germs or grime.
  • Mop water: Dissolves the salt and distributes it over the floor.
  • Result claimed online: A cleaner, fresher-smelling floor that supposedly stays clean longer.

But there’s an important catch

Salt doesn’t create a protective coating that keeps floors clean for a week. It also isn’t a substitute for a proper floor cleaner or disinfectant. On some flooring—especially natural stone, unsealed wood, or delicate surfaces—salt or salty water could potentially cause damage or leave residue.

For routine cleaning, use a floor cleaner appropriate for your specific flooring and follow its dilution instructions.
