🛏️ Here’s How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows and Leave Them White & Fresh-Smelling
Over time, pillows can collect sweat, body oils, dust, and odors. Instead of replacing them immediately, you may be able to freshen washable pillows at home.
1. Check the care label first
Before washing, check whether the pillow is machine-washable and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Memory-foam and latex pillows generally shouldn’t be put in a washing machine.
2. Remove the pillowcase and protector
Wash the pillowcase and protective cover separately. These can hold a surprising amount of sweat and oils.
3. Wash washable pillows
For pillows that are safe to machine-wash, use the recommended amount of a mild laundry detergent and the warmest water allowed by the care label.
Washing two pillows together can help keep the machine balanced.
4. For yellowing
Yellow stains are often caused by sweat and body oils. For washable white pillows, an oxygen-based laundry whitener may help brighten them when used according to its label.
Avoid mixing cleaning products—especially bleach with ammonia, acids, or other household cleaners.
5. Rinse thoroughly
An extra rinse can help remove leftover detergent, which is particularly useful for bulky pillows that can retain soap.
6. Dry completely
Dry the pillow according to its care instructions. Make sure the inside is completely dry before putting it back on the bed. Moisture trapped inside can encourage mildew and unpleasant odors.
For dryer-safe pillows, periodically checking and fluffing them during drying can help.
7. Keep pillows fresher for longer
Use a washable pillow protector, wash bedding regularly, and allow pillows to air out when practical.
