What Is The Normal Blood Pressure For Each Age

There is a common misconception that blood pressure has a different “normal” number for every adult age. In current adult guidelines, the categories are generally the same for adults regardless of whether you’re 30, 50, 70, or 80. (professional.heart.org)

🩺 Blood pressure by age

Age Normal / healthy range
Newborns & infants Varies substantially with age and clinical circumstances; pediatric reference ranges are used.
1–12 years Must be interpreted according to age, sex, and height percentile. Normal is below the 90th percentile. (AAP Publications)
13–17 years <120/80 mmHg is normal. (AAP Publications)
18–64 years <120/80 mmHg is normal. (professional.heart.org)
65+ years <120/80 mmHg is still classified as normal, although treatment targets may be individualized based on overall health. (professional.heart.org)

What the adult numbers mean

  • Normal: below 120/80
  • Elevated: 120–129 and below 80
  • Stage 1 hypertension: 130–139 or 80–89
  • Stage 2 hypertension: 140 or higher or 90 or higher
  • Severely high: above 180 and/or above 120 — especially concerning if accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, vision changes, or difficulty speaking. (www.heart.org)

👴 What about people over 65?

Don’t assume that 140/90 is “normal because you’re old.” It is still considered high blood pressure under adult classification. However, doctors may choose individualized treatment goals for older adults depending on frailty, other illnesses, medications, and risk of falls or low blood pressure.

Also, one high reading doesn’t automatically mean hypertension. Blood pressure should be measured correctly and generally assessed using repeated readings. (professional.heart.org)

Example: A blood pressure of 128/76 in a 70-year-old is elevated, not “normal for their age.” A reading of 118/76 is in the normal category.

If you give me a specific age and blood-pressure reading (for example, 72 years — 145/85), I can tell you exactly what category it falls into.
