🧠10 Early Signs of Dementia You Shouldn’t Ignore
Dementia is not a normal part of getting older. It describes problems with memory, thinking, language or behavior that become significant enough to interfere with everyday life. Occasional forgetfulness can be normal; persistent or worsening changes that affect daily activities deserve medical evaluation.
1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life
Repeatedly forgetting recent conversations, appointments or newly learned information can be concerning—especially when the person keeps asking the same questions.
2. Difficulty doing familiar tasks
Someone may suddenly struggle with activities they’ve performed for years, such as cooking a familiar meal, managing household tasks or handling routine finances.
3. Trouble finding the right words
Frequent difficulty following conversations, expressing thoughts or finding familiar words can be an early sign.
4. Getting confused about time or place
Losing track of dates, seasons or locations—or becoming lost in a familiar area—is more concerning than occasionally forgetting what day it is.
5. Problems with planning or judgment
Difficulty managing money, paying bills, following a familiar plan or making reasonable decisions can occur as cognitive impairment progresses.
6. Frequently misplacing things
Repeatedly putting objects in unusual places and being unable to retrace one’s steps to find them can be a warning sign.
7. Changes in mood or personality
Unusual anxiety, irritability, withdrawal, apathy or changes in social behavior can accompany dementia.
8. Difficulty understanding visual information
Some people develop problems judging distances, recognizing objects or navigating spaces. These symptoms can be particularly important in certain types of dementia.
9. Losing interest in normal activities
A person may gradually stop participating in hobbies, social activities or other things they previously enjoyed.
10. Increasing confusion or unusual behavior
Hallucinations, paranoia, impulsive behavior or major changes in judgment can occur, although these features aren’t present in everyone and may have other causes
