“Warning! If You Find a Silverfish in Your Home, It’s a Sign You Need to…”

The viral headline is partly true, but exaggerated. Finding a silverfish doesn’t mean your house is dangerous or that you have a serious infestation. Silverfish are generally harmless to people and don’t bite or transmit disease. (Virginia Tech Publications)

However, seeing them—especially repeatedly—can be a useful warning to check for excess moisture. Silverfish prefer damp, humid areas such as bathrooms, under sinks, basements, laundry rooms, and other poorly ventilated spaces. (National Pesticide Information Center)

🏠 What you should check

  1. Look for leaks around sinks, toilets, pipes, roofs, and windows.
  2. Improve ventilation, particularly in bathrooms and other humid rooms.
  3. Use a dehumidifier in persistently damp areas.
  4. Reduce clutter, especially piles of cardboard, newspapers, books, and fabrics.
  5. Store dry foods in sealed containers.
  6. Seal cracks and gaps around pipes, doors, windows, and baseboards. (National Pesticide Information Center)

Silverfish can feed on paper, book bindings, wallpaper glue, cardboard, cereals, and some fabrics, so a large population can eventually cause damage. (Penn State Extension)

Bottom line: One silverfish isn’t a reason to panic. But repeated sightings are a good reason to investigate moisture and humidity, because correcting those conditions is one of the most effective ways to discourage them. (National Pesticide Information Center)
