How Often You Should Really Shower: What Experts Want You to Know

How Often Should You Really Shower?

There isn’t one medically required number of showers for every adult. Your activity level, climate, sweating, skin type and personal preference all matter.

🚿 A practical approach

For many adults, showering every day or every other day is reasonable. If you exercise, sweat heavily, work in a dirty environment, or live in a hot/humid climate, you may need to shower more frequently.

On the other hand, showering several times a day isn’t generally necessary and can aggravate dry or sensitive skin.

🧴 If your skin gets dry

Dermatologists recommend keeping showers to about 5–10 minutes, using warm rather than hot water, and choosing a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. You don’t necessarily need to soap every inch of your body every time; cleanser can be concentrated on areas that need it most, such as the armpits and groin. (American Academy of Dermatology)

Afterward, gently pat your skin dry and apply moisturizer while it’s still slightly damp. (American Academy of Dermatology)

What about older adults?

There is no rule that people over 65 must stop showering daily. If daily showers don’t cause dryness or irritation, they’re generally fine. If skin becomes increasingly dry with age, shorter, lukewarm showers and regular moisturizing may be more comfortable.

Bottom line: Don’t obsess over a specific number. Shower when you need to based on sweat, dirt and your skin’s needs, while avoiding excessively hot or prolonged showers.
